DEVELOPMENT OF UberVariO

UberVariO has been manually developed from scratch. Central concepts in each field were collected from the literature, databases, and web resources. Definitions were collected from 80 existing ontologies and other systematics, see here a list of ontologies that provided concepts and definitions to UberVariO.

UberVariO is related to Variation Ontology (VariO) that is used to annotate variations and their effects, mechanisms, and consequences in biological macromolecules.

Each concept in UberVariO has a comprehensive definition. 83% of the concepts and definitions were made for UberVariO, 17% were obtained from other systematics. UberVariO contains terms from 80 ontologies.

Further external resources are listed here. Concepts and their hierarchy, but without definitions, were obtained from these sources.

Definition guidelines

Terms are defined in the singular, unless the concept is for a plural.

Some existing definitions were edited to exclude lists, encyclopedic information, examples, and other details irrelevant to the definition.

Definitions were harmonised so that related terms across the branches have the same format.

Negative definitions were avoided.

Guidelines for writing definitions were followed (links to papers): QEIOS, PhilPapers.

UberVariO was generated with Protégé ontology editor.
